CONOLIDINE & PEA
Scientists have shown that a naturally derived painkiller can offer chronic pain treatment.
The pinwheel flower, which is traditionally used in Chinese medicine, interacts with an opioid receptor. Recently identified as ACKR3/CXCR7, this receptor manages the brain’s naturally produced opioid peptides. These are pain receptors that regulate pain relief and emotions.
“The discovery of ACKR3 as a target of conolidine further emphasizes the role of this newly discovered receptor in modulating the opioid system and, consequently, in regulating our perception of pain,” said corresponding author Dr. Andy Chevigné, head of Immuno-Pharmacology and Interactomics at LIH.
“Our findings could also mean that conolidine, and potentially also its synthetic analogues, could carry new hope for the treatment of chronic pain and depression, particularly given the fact that conolidine was reported to trigger fewer of the detrimental side-effects — namely addiction, tolerance and respiratory problems — associated with commonly used opioid drugs like morphine and fentanyl.”Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is a chemical made from fat. It is found naturally in foods such as egg yolks and peanuts, and in the human body.
PEA can bind to cells in the body and reduce pain and swelling. PEA’s actions on multiple molecular targets while modulating multiple inflammatory mediators provide therapeutic benefits in many applications, including immunity, brain health, allergy, pain modulation, joint health, sleep and recovery.
